ABOUT THE FILM

‘The Destruction of Memory’ is based on the book of the same name by Robert Bevan. It carries with it a message that has often ignored during times of conflict – monuments and symbols of culture are the forgotten victims of war. Attacks on these symbols, to which identities of communities are intertwined, are deliberate and calculated, with the agenda to break the human spirit and obliterate evidence of existence.

The film traces the history of cultural genocide through the 20thcentury, interviewing survivors of brutal regimes and using archival footage to bring the evidence of the atrocities to the fore. This hard-hitting film, however, also carries within it the parallel narrative of hope, tracing the stories of individuals and organisations who have committed themselves to the cause of protecting and restoring symbols of collective identities and memories from the perils of fundamentalism and fascism.

This film is of searing relevance given the threat to culture that has scared many parts of the world today (Syria and Iraq – the ‘cradle of civilization’ – for example. It is a powerful reminder of what is at stake while also revealing the power of individual and collective action in the face of this onslaught.

We hope you will be able to join us for this very special screening!
