Flashback Pune: Life in the 1700s

A unique learning experience with loads of fun filled activities

with Tania Kamath

Note about the Workshop:

In the 1700s, when 5000 people lived in New York, 10,000 people lived in Mumbai, around 25,000 people lived in Pune! The headquarters of the Maratha empire that ruled over much of India, Pune was where all the action was. It was an important educational, commercial, military hub for almost a hundred years. No wonder it is the cultural capital of Maharashtra even today.

Let's see what life was back then through this experiential workshop. During the session, kids could:

  • Interview an imaginary character from the Peshwa's court
  • Make noodles with noodle makers, see how flour was ground in stone grinders
  • Design a traditional home
  • Sketch or paint costumes from that era
  • Play a card/ board game from that time
  • Explore Bhatukali - miniature toy utensils that kids played with during that period

The workshop gives insights into professions, architecture, social life, leisure of that era. It is based on the book Flashback Pune: People & Places around the 1700s that was created with kids, for kids.  The session will be conducted by the co-author Tania Kamath.

Those who attend may be selected to be part of an upcoming book project on Mumbai.
